Jim and Marlene Zdanovec on their land in Marathon County. In March and April of 2003, we talked with five Wisconsin landowners for their perspectives on managing land. As we discovered, each landowner managed their property with different goals, but had many values in common. From praire restoration to wildlife management to maple syrup production, we talked about it all so that you could see what some of our diverse Wisconsin landowners have been working on, and understand a little more about management planning.

Tom DeWitt demonstrates how he taps his maples at the Rusk County property. We first went to Chetek, Wisconsin to visit with Tom DeWitt on his property in Rusk County, then to the Hockermans' land in Jackson County. And on we went to the Zdanovecs' in Marathon County, the Shackelfords' in Rock County and finally we talked with Dick and Charlotte Thompson via telephone about managing their properties from a distance in Walworth Co. and Florida.

To take the same trip we did, click on the name of the landowners on the state map below, or on the links at the bottom of this page. On subsequent pages you will find a story about how each property owner manages their land, and you will have the opportunity to listen via real audio (or standard mp3s) to some of what they had to say in their own words. So get your mouses ready and travel with us!

To learn about the Hockermans, the Dewitts, the Zdanovecs, the Shackelfords and the Thompsons, follow the links here.

To download audio files on subsequent pages you will have a choice between real audio and standard mp3s. Mp3s generally open without additional software requirements. Real audio requires a real audio player, but audio clips generally download faster and smoother. You can quickly download a real audio player FOR FREE, by following the link here. (Don't let them fool you. They will offer you one with more bells and whistles that costs money. You want the Basic Player that is free!)
