Dear Woodland Owner:

We invite you to a series of educational classes designed to help you better understand and manage your woodlands. The first three classes in the series focus on:

• assistance with your woodlands;
• planning for your woodlands; &
• recreation opportunities on your lands..

The classes are sponsored by University of Wisconsin– Extension and the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (WDNR), and taught by experts in woodland ecology, forest health and management, timber harvesting, and related topics. Whether you are a long-time woodland landowner or someone completely new to the experience, the classes will have much to offer. Please take a moment to look through this brochure for the “how, when, and why” of the Learn about your Land woodland classes.

  • Pre-registration is appreciated, but not required.  Registration is $20 for the entire series or $5 per walk-in session.  Receive a free Forestry book at the first class if you pre-register and pre-pay for the entire series by January 7th.

The creation of a healthy, productive woodland requires knowledge of specific
techniques and the investment of time and money. This session will link you
to the people, programs and organizations that offer technical and financial assistance
for all aspects of your woodland.

Success Takes Planning; get the most from your woodland
A well-managed woodland begins with a well thought out plan.  This workshop will take you through the beginning steps of forest management.  Start by considering what is important to you, learn about the factors that influence your property’s potential, and what resources will be needed to make your vision a reality.

February:
Recreation trails and property boundaries
Many landowners get the most from their land through hunting, bird & wildlife watching, hiking and skiing.  This session will start with tips on trail planning, design and maintenance.  The second half of the session will focus on the importance of knowing your property boundaries, how to identify them and what legal considerations you should be aware of.

Thinning, Group Selection?  What does that mean? 
Do you wonder whether you need to cut trees? Are you getting ready for a harvest? Gain an understanding of what is meant by thinning, selection harvest, group selection harvest, clear cut and shelterwood harvest.  Learn what each term means, when each is used, and what it will look like if recommended for your woodland.

March:
Introduction to timber harvesting and sales
Now that you know how your tress might be harvested, take the next step to having a successful timber sale.  Learn the steps and timeline involved in conducting sale from establishment to selling to harvest.  This workshop will introduce you to how to select a logger, why a timber sale contract is important and the steps involved in conducting a harvest.

What’s damaging my woods?
The forest is alive, or is it?  Do you have injured or dying trees?  Your trees look fine, but are they healthy?  This session will address insects, diseases, animals, invasive species, environmental factors, fire and improper management that can affect the health of your forest.
