Dear Woodland Owner:

We invite you to a series of educational classes designed to help you better understand and manage your woodlands. The first three classes in the series will focus on:

• Identify plant species growing on your land;
• successful woodland management takes planning; and
• learn what professional and financial assistance may be available to you for your woodland management
activities.

Whether you are a long-time woodland owner or someone completely new to the experience, the classes will have much to offer. Please take a moment to look through this brochure for the “how, when, and why” of the Learn about your Land

Registration information

Pre-registration is appreciated, but not required. Receive a free tree identification book if you pre-register for the entire series by December 30, 2009. Walk-in registration is also available before each session.

Registration is $35 per ownership for the entire series, or $10 per session.

What’s Damaging My Woods?
A healthy woodland provides many benefits. Is yours healthy? Do you have injured or dying trees? Your woods may look
fine, but is it healthy? This session will address insects, diseases, animals, non-native invasive species, environmental factors, and improper woodland management that can affect the health of your woodland.

Getting to Know Your Local Trees & Non-native Plants
Join a forester as you get to know what trees are on your land. We will review the major trees and invasive species you will likely find on your property, and teach you how to identify them when you return to your own property.

Success Takes Planning; Get the Most from Your Woodland
A well-managed woodland begins with a well thought out plan. This workshop will take you through the beginning steps of forest management. Start by considering what is important to you, learn about the factors that influence your property’s
potential, and what resources will be needed to make your vision a reality.

People and Programs: Assistance with Your Woodlands
The creation of a healthy, productive woodland requires knowledge of specific management techniques and the investment of time and money. This session will introduce you to the people, programs and organizations that offer technical and financial assistance in all aspects of your woodland.

Success With Tree Planting
This workshop will take you through the steps needed to successfully establish a new forest. Learn which trees will grow best on your land, how to prepare your land, techniques for planting, and how to care for newly planted trees.

Introduction to Timber Management, Harvesting, & Sales
Learn how to decide which, if any, trees should be selected for cutting and why. Gain an understanding of what is meant by thinning, selection harvest, group selection harvest, clear cut and shelterwood harvest. Learn the benefits of
removing some trees as well as the reasons for not cutting others. You will be introduced to the steps and timeline involved in conducting a successful timber sale from deciding on what to harvest to final closeout of your sale. This workshop will provide guidance when selecting a logger, why a timber sale contract is important and the supervisory steps involved in conducting a harvest.

Wildlife Extravaganza: Managing Your Woodlands for Wildlife
Learn about a broad array of woodland wildlife and how you can enhance habitat. We will cover methods to boost the food and shelter values of your woodland for game species. The speaker will also talk about habitat for birds, small mammals, amphibians and reptiles.
