Biologs - "Soft" Form of Erosion Control

Shoreline erosion is a big concern for many waterfront property owners in the Upper Green Bay Basin.  While rip-rap is a erosion control measure that is commonly seen, biologs are offering a natural alternative that is less expensive and often more effective. These logs, made of coconut fiber, are staked and chained to the shoreline.
The benefit of these logs is that existing shoreline vegetation roots will grow into the logs, increasing the stability and natural appearance over time.  If the shoreline is devoid of vegetation, plant plugs can be planted directly into these logs.  Biologs are currently available to interested landowners through the Marinette County Land and Water Conservation Department.
