Wonderful Wetlands

<Back to Waterways

  marsh

This map shows the distribution of wetlands and marshes within northern Wisconsin.  If you'll notice, there are many acres of wetlands within the Upper Chippewa Basin.  This is due to the fact that our  landscape was recently glaciated.  Wetlands filter runoff from the landscape and serve as valuable water storage areas, thus minimizing floods and damage to people's lives homes.

If you have any specific questions on wetlands and their benefits to water quality in Wisconsin, contact your local DNR water regulations specialist.  You may also contact Pat Trochlell, DNR Wetlands Ecologist, 608/267-2453.
