Waterways

Rivers, streams, lakes, and wetlands are the lifeblood of the Basin. They provide excellent habitat for wildlife, places we humans call home, clean drinking water, as well as superb places to fish, hunt, and canoe. The Upper Chippewa Basin contains many excellent rivers, including the Chippewa, Flambeau, Jump, Couderay, Thornapple, and Elk.  In addition to the rivers, several large impoundment lakes are located within the Basin, providing some excellent lake recreation opportunities.  The world-famous Chippewa Flowage, Dairyland Flowage, and Lake Holcombe are probably the three most well-known.  The headwaters of the Basin lies in lake-rich Vilas County.  This area contains one of the highest densities of freshwater lakes in the world.
