Landforms of Wisconsin

Wisconsin is a flat state compared to those states in the Appalachian and Rocky Mountain regions of the U.S.  We do, however, have major landforms (or topography) that affect our watersheds.  You can notice from this map that Wisconsin has several major landforms:

1.) The "Driftless Area" along the Mississippi River which was not recently glaciated.

2.) The glaciated area of northwestern and north central Wisconsin.

3.) The coastal plains along Lake Superior and Lake Michigan.

In the Upper Chippewa Basin, we have some noticeable topography like the Blue Hills of Rusk and Sawyer County and the lake rich region of western Vilas County.  You can see from this image the river valleys carved over millennia by the erosive power of our Rivers. Can you find the valleys of the Chippewa, Flambeau, Jump, and Thornapple?
