Mary Jo has agreed to be the chairman this year. John
will continue a roll as a co-chair as needed. THANK YOU Mary Jo for
taking this on.
Agreed conference date
is June 19th and 20th.
Do we want to change the conference
format, or do something in celebration of the 10th anniversary?
1. Conference similar to last year targeting lake associations, lake
officials and agency folks
2. We are missing the people with the greatest “negative”
impacts (weekend lake users, “bullets and bait” people).
We could coordinate and partner something with Muskie fest. We could
sponsor a booth etc.
3. Reach business people / chamber of commerce. How the
people they attract affects the lakes. Why the health of the lakes impacts
their finances
4. Reach county boards and zoning. Time is an issue with them and it
is difficult to get them to come. It may be easier to take to them during
meetings.
5. Have a youth stream. AM – basic limo, lake life, youth presentation
by a group involved in lake stewardship. In the PM send them out on
a pontoon (noon to 3pm) Target ages would be middle school to high school.
We could target scout groups, home schoolers, youth landing monitors,
etc. Let’s pay them to come. We could use a nomination process
similar to Badger State selection. We should have one person that could
coordinate this effort.
6. To celebrate our 10th anniversary and 40th anniversary for Wild Rivers
Legislation. We could work with the Park Service. They are sponsoring
Big Top Chautauqua to present the rivers program they did 20 years ago
around the watershed. This could be one of the stops. (about 2 ½
hour presentation). The morning would be similar to the past with streams.
During lunch we could invite Tia Nelson (Gaylord Nelson’s granddaughter)
and Fred Madison that helped write the original wild rivers legislation.
Have the performance in the afternoon. We could have the performance
in a tent outside, but there may be technical issues. Or the red arrow
can hold about 400-450 people. (We would have to eat lunch elsewhere).
Voted on options –
overwhelming to have the Big Top come down. John
will follow up on this.
Grants
On thing Bayfield has done is- apply for a lake grant (Deadline is Feb
1st). With matching they are looking at $4,000. $1000 will be for brochures,
website, and newsletter. The rest would be used to encourage people
to come to conferences. If a group sends and pays for one person, the
grant would pay for two. An emphasis would be to have new people sign
up. (There is a better chance of getting a grant if it is county based
versus individual lake groups)
Last year we netted ~$3,500 dollars. This money was divided
between 5 counties (each got about $600) and WAL receiving 20%. If we
want a big speaker (one that will attract a crowed) we may need help
through another grant.
Jan has been looking into youth based grants and there
are several possibilities we could try for.
Promotion ideas
Radio spots seemed to work well. Maybe next year we should plan a bit
more. Promotions should be included in town and county newsletters to
reach more people and perhaps as a future education/ outreach tool.
Budget
Some ideas to reduce spending. Color brochures – can we go black
and white. No booklet, reduce duplication. We will need to buy ads,
papers did not put in news releases.
WAL
Added responsibilities. Will they continue to do registration and handle
money? Earl will contact WAL and get it straight.
Do we want
to continue with the barbeque?
In the past we have broken even, with sponsor help. Mainly the audience
is speakers, vendors and conference planners. If we have it there are
still major issues with the food and accurate head counts. Roger and
Pamela will poll the vendors and others as to its importance. We could
allow vendors to talk about themselves as incentive to show up. Maybe
we can change to something other than a barbeque?
Program Brainstorming If you have more
