Walworth County Lake Survey

Since 2001, Walworth County has successfully implemented a lake protection/education program for county residents, especially lakefront property owners. Last year the county finalized a report on a
comprehensive survey they conducted in 2005 to fine tune their program. Nearly 2000 Walworth County lake residents completed the survey. Contact Audrey Greene, Walworth County Lake Specialist, to learn more: 262-741-4360, agreen@co.walworth.wi.us.

Seven reasons why it may be time for statewide phosphorus legislation
for lawn fertilizers

The Partnership is discussing the potential environmental benefits of statewide legislation regulating phosphorus in lawn fertilizers. Wisconsin currently has no policy concerning private residential fertilizer applications. Although a number of communities in Wisconsin have enacted phosphorus restrictive ordinances, the Partnership feels a clear-cut statewide policy would be more effective, easier to enforce, and easier for the fertilizer industry to comply with.  The member’s discussed supporting a new law that would allow lawn fertilizers to contain up to 3% phosphorus.  The 3% standard would permit continued sale of organic, or compost-based, products like Milorganite, which have a substantial market in Wisconsin.  The partnership feels any statewide legislation should preserve the rights of communities to enact stricter phosphorus bans should they wish.
