The parties committed to this partnership are united by a mutual concern for the environmental integrity of the Milwaukee River Basin for use by current and future generations. The parties recognize that the basin’s future quality of life and economic health are fundamentally dependent upon the preservation, maintenance, restoration and sustainability of the natural resources of the Milwaukee River Basin.

Background

The Milwaukee River Basin is one of Wisconsin’s most significant natural and cultural resources. First inhabited by indigenous people drawn to the area’s abundant natural resources, the 850 square mile basin is now home to approximately one million people living in seven counties. Important linkages exist between the basin’s land and water resources and its residents’ quality of life and economic well-being. The basin drains into Lake Michigan from which most of the drinking water supply is drawn. In addition, leading industries such as agriculture, manufacturing, tourism and outdoor recreation depend upon access to abundant supplies of fresh water and sustainable land use.

Purpose

Begun as an initiative of the Department of Natural Resources and the UW-Extension, the Milwaukee River Basin Partnership is a voluntary coalition of businesses, nonprofit groups, public agencies, educational institutions, organizations and individuals committed to restoring and sustaining the ecosystem of the Milwaukee River Basin, while ensuring economic viability. Toward that end, the partnership promotes comprehensive resource management, information exchange, inter-governmental coordination, and citizen involvement.

Mission

“Assist those who reside or work within the watersheds of the Milwaukee, Menomonee, and Kinnickinnic Rivers initiate projects and exchange resource information to enable stewardship of land and water resources."

Vision

“A Milwaukee River Basin with a sustained and restored ecosystem that offers a healthy environment, strong economy and high quality of life for current and future generations.”

Action

The Milwaukee River Basin Partnership will foster collaborations which lead to the protection, restoration and enhancement of Wisconsin’s most populated river basin. Envisioned activities include on-the-ground projects, environmental education, research, and public policy recommendations. We, the undersigned, mutually agree to provide assistance, as available, to support the efforts of the partnership for the Milwaukee River Basin. Assistance may take many forms including technical expertise, financial support, volunteers, staff time, publicity or implementing projects supported by the partnership.
