Empowering People to Take Action Toward a Sustainable Lake Community

The first of it's kind, this program creates an innovative educational opportunity for citizens to gain in-depth knowledge of the complex interaction between environmental protection, economic development, and community well being and social needs, while experiencing the impact of each of these factors on natural resource conservation and land use decisions using the Lake Superior Basin as a “living classroom.”

Lake Superior Pathfinders offers participants an opportunity to discover more about their personal leadership style/capabilities, experientially immerse themselves in Lake Superior 's critical natural resource issues, and discover how to utilize their skills to take action in their own communities. Experts and educators from the University of Wisconsin-Extension, Northland College , the Lake Superior Bi-National Program, and other partners will facilitate these experiences through Challenge ropes courses, discussion groups in beautiful settings, and on the water exploration of the Kakogan Sloughs of the Bad River Indian Reservation, also known as the Everglades of the Northwoods. See the program schedule here.

This Program focuses on several critical lake issues, including:

  • Toxins and Bioaccumulation
  • Habitat Change/Impairments
  • Invasive Species
  • Sustainability and Ecological foot printing
  • Integrating Natural Resource Values in Economic Development

Participants will be asked to fully commit to all days, and to leave all other work at home. No cell phones or laptops, and staying at a retreat center will help to insure that all participants are fully focused on this unique learning experience. See a PDF of the Lake Superior Pathfinder brochure here.
