“What Farmers Need to Know” On March 29, 2007 the Northern Great Lakes Visitor Center will host a free workshop, “What Farmers Need to Know,” to help farmers protect water quality. The workshop is from 9:45 am to 2:00 pm and lunch is provided. Pre-registration is required. Contact MaryJo Gingras at the County Land Conservation Department at 682-7187 or 1-800-682-1675. The program brochure is on-line at www.abdilcd.org/projects/documents/Flyer2.pdf. Wisconsin’s rules to control polluted runoff from farms went into effect in 2002. The purpose of the workshop is to assist farmers in meeting their responsibilities to prevent polluted runoff and protect water quality. These rules apply to crop producers, livestock producers, fruit growers, and hobby farmers. The workshop will also cover funding assistance for conservation practices, nutrient management plans, the Conservation Reserve Enhancement Program, managed rotational grazing, and tax benefits of the state managed forest law for woodlands. “What Farmers Need to Know” is sponsored by the Ashland Bayfield
Douglas Iron County Land and Water Conservation Department, the U.S. Natural
Resources Conservation Service, Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources,
and University of Wisconsin Extension. For More information on these events and others contact Nancy Larson at (715) 685-2674 or nancy.larson@ces.uwex.edu
