Cattle Stream Crossing

Dick Cates' Farm

Two types of cattle crossings are shown here.  The first is a "chute" type of crossing.  This crossing, created with technical assistance from NRCS, is fenced so cattle can only cross the stream at this particular place.

Below is an unfenced cattle crossing.

Unfenced Crossing

Peggy Compton, Basin Educator, at a graveled crossing on Cates farm.  Mr. Cates watched where his cattle were usually crossing the stream and then graveled that area.  This further encouraged the cows to cross at this point, reducing the impact on the rest of the streambed and stream banks.
