GPS on the Back 40: Assisting Forest Management with Global Positioning
Steve Jungst, Harmon Family Professor, Dept. of Natural Resource Ecology & Mgmt., Iowa State University, Ames, IA
Global positioning offers some interesting possibilities for assisting in forest management. Originally designed as a military system, GPS is being used widely by the civilian population, and it may be useful for your forest management operation. This presentation will help you understand potential management applications for GPS, system costs and requirements, and limitations faced by GPS users.
Steve Jungst holds an endowed professorship in Natural Resource Ecology and Management at Iowa State University, where he has been a forestry faculty member since 1975. He served as Chair of the Forestry Department from 1985 to 1995. He currently teaches quantitative forestry courses at Iowa State, including Resource Measurements and Evaluation, Natural Resource Photogrammetry and Geographic Information Systems, and Integrating GPS and GIS for Natural Resource Management. He serves as treasurer for the Iowa Tree Farm Committee, and he and his wife live on a 50 acre tree farm south of Nevada, Iowa .
