Forest Carbon Basics: A Simplified Look at a Complex Process
Jay Hayek, Extension Forester, University of Illinois, Urbana, IL

Forest carbon and carbon credits has received considerable attention over the last decade.  However, many people have a vague understanding regarding the fundamental processes of how trees and forests sequester and store carbon.  This presentation will provide attendees a basic understanding of carbon sequestration and the important role trees and forests play in the context of the global carbon cycle.

Jay Hayek is an Extension Forester with the Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Sciences at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Prior to joining the University of Illinois, Jay worked as a District Forester for the Illinois DNR. He has an M.S. degree in Forest Resources with emphasis in Silviculture from the University of Idaho, and a B.S. degree in Forest Science from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Jay's research interests include hardwood silviculture, rehabilitation of degraded hardwood stands, crop tree management of fine hardwoods, and floodplain afforestation.
