Deer Damage and Tree Protection Aids
Steve Bertjens, Coordinator, Southwest Badger Resource Conservation & Development, USDA-NRCS, Lancaster, WI

Throughout most of the tri-state area countryside, record setting numbers of white-tailed deer are eating away at the forests. The impact of this large deer herd can be lethal to forestry regeneration efforts. Expanded hunting policies have not diminished the deer population boom forcing landowners to adopt aggressive steps to protect their newly planted trees. This presentation will provide information on a variety of tree protection aides and associated costs including: repellents, tree shelters, fencing, bud caps and make-it-yourself options.

Steven Bertjens received a B.S. degree from the University of Wisconsin- Stevens Point in Watershed Management with a minor in Soil Science. From 1992 to 1997 he was employed with the Grant County Land Conservation Department, working directly with landowners on conservation and land management projects. Steven was the Executive Director for the Southwest Badger Resource Conservation and Development (RC&D) Council from 1997-2001, where he managed numerous forestry projects including Direct Seed Tree Demonstrations, Commercial Hazelnut Development Project, Southwest WI Forest Stewardship Assistance Program, and Forest Invasive Species Initiative. Since 2002 Steve has been employed with the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS), serving as a coordinator for the RC&D program.
