Should I Strike the Match? Considerations for Prescribed Burns
Rich Patterson
A New Jersey native, Rich Patterson graduated from the University of Idaho with a degree in fishery management. Following three years as a biologist in Alaska , he completed a year of graduate study in communications at the University of Northern Colorado . He has worked for the US Fish and Wildlife Service, the Alaska Department of Fish and Game, and the U.S. Forest Service. He served as Director of the Dillon Nature Center and has been Director of the nonprofit Indian Creek Nature Center since 1978. Rich and his wife, Marion, live in Cedar Rapids , Iowa and have two grown children. He enjoys bicycling, hunting, hiking, fishing, canoeing, gardening, and reading. He has written hundreds of articles on fishing, hunting, nature study, and travel that have appeared in dozens of publications. He is a founder of the Association of Nature Center Administrators and serves on the Greater Cedar Rapids Community Foundation Board. He is Second Vice President of the Outdoor Writers Association of America. In 2002 he was inducted into the National Circle of Conservation Chiefs. In 1991 he received the Theodore Roosevelt Conservation Award from President Bush.
