Priority Projects for the Upper Fox Basin Partnership - as of May 2000

1. Promote a Buffer Program basin-wide
2. Sponsor/coordinate a shoreland restoration program throughout Basin
3. Take an informed position on high-capacity wells, water mining and extraction
4. Develop Upper Fox Display
5. River monitoring program
6. Eradicate non-native species
7. Educate public on wetlands value
8. Document economic value of wetlands
9. Map/create corridors
10. Wetland restoration project

Habitat Loss and Land Use

  • Sponsor/coordinate shoreland restoration program throughout Basin (education of land owners) (5) Sponsor/coordinate a shoreland buffer restoration demonstration program Educate builders, realtors etc on shoreland buffers and their value Educate people on value of habitats and how they relate to land use decisions Support counties' shoreland and environmental issues Map/create corridors in Basin (3) Work with local governments to prioritize acquisition of important habitats in Basin

Loss of Wetlands

  • Do a wetland restoration project (1) Eradicate non-native, invasive species (buckthorn, loosestrife) (2) Educate about non-native, invasive species Encourage Rush Lake protection during town of Nepeuskun. Land Use planning Coordinate Marquette county (an other counties) wetland restoration projects Educate public on value of wetlands (3) Demonstrate shortfalls of wetland protection rules and regulations
  • Document economic value of a wetland (ie. flood control, habitat, fish species etc) (3)

Miscellaneous

  • Organize and hold Basin Fair Create a display for Upper Fox Basin - to be used at workshops, meetings, open houses etc. and Farm Progress Days, 11-14 July (3) Take a position on high-capacity wells, water mining and extraction (4) Build upper Fox Partnership capacity and knowledge by developing a river monitoring program (2)
